Neonatal hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in term infants, is a major cause of neonatal mortality and severe neurologic disability. Objectives. To identify in labor fetal monitoring characteristic patterns and perinatal factors associated with neonatal HIE. Study design. Single-center retrospective case–control study between 2010 and 2017.

In 2010-06-01 · Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) is the clinical manifestation of disordered neonatal brain function. It is a relatively common clinical condition which results in serious consequences for many of the infants including death, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and other significant cognitive, developmental and behavioural problems. Neonatal encephalopathy can be caused by a wide variety of complications during or around the time of birth, including the following. Birth asphyxia (lack of oxygen to the brain) In the womb, babies get oxygen from the blood that travels from the mother to the placenta to the umbilical cord. Clinical suspicion of neonatal encephalopathy should be considered in any infant exhibiting an abnormal level of consciousness, seizures, tone and reflex abnormalities, apnea, aspiration, feeding difficulties [ 1-3 ], and an abnormal hearing screen. This topic will review the etiology and pathogenesis of neonatal encephalopathy.

In some instances, HIE may not be preventable. However, in most cases, oxygen deprivation occurs due to a health issue that medical staff missed or mismanaged during pregnancy, birth, or delivery. While the following is by no means a comprehensive list, it illustrates the wide variety of conditions that can cause or be risk factors for HIE. We examined neonatal predictors of epilepsy in term newborns with neonatal encephalopathy (NE) by studying children enrolled in a longitudinal, single center cohort study. Objective Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) is the third leading cause of child mortality. Preclinical studies suggest infection and inflammation can sensitise or precondition the newborn brain to injury. Apgar Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) is a clinical syndrome commonly diagnosed in infants and foals but is poorly described in calves. Methods: Objective Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) may be associated with intrapartum sentinel events or may be unexplained. We sought to identify risk factors for unexplained HIE cases and compare their morbidity and mortality to cases associated with sentinel events.
