During this lab, we measured our lung capacity. The amount of that you move in and out of your lungs while breathing normally is called the tidal volume. The maximum amount of air moved in and out of the lungs is called the vital capacity.
Total lung capacity, or TLC, refers to the maximum amount of air that your lungs can hold. Typically, men have a greater lung capacity than women. At rest a man’s lungs can hold about 1.5 pints of air, while women’s lungs can hold around 0.6 to 0.8 pints. However, most of us do not use our full lung capacity.
Pre-Lab Discussion Read the entire investigation. Then, work with a partner to answer the following questions. 1. Why is it important to measure tidal volume and tidal capacity more than once and then calculate means for these measurements? Residual volume is the amount of air left in lungs even after maximal expiration.

One way is by using a piece of laboratory equipment called a spirometer. Lung capacity can also be measured using a balloon. The data you obtain may not be as accurate as that obtained using a spirometer though. In this video, I show how you can calculate your vital capacity (the maximum air you can breathe in one breath). Lung capacity provides information about the general health of the lungs. In this lab, you will measure three indices of lung capacity using a balloon. Lung Capacity Lab Human lung capacity – or how much air can fit in your lungs – can be measured in several ways. In the lab, you will be calculating your own vital capacity through the use of a formula and through the measurement of the amount of air you exhale into a balloon. Like most organs, your lungs play a vital role in your overall health and your body’s ability to function properly.
